Gujarati Grammar

The Gujarati grammar allows you to manipulate the vocabulary to obtain multiple forms of a word. The grammatical rules below are the most important in Gujarati and help connect words or shape the structure. We start with the prepositions:

And: અને  [ane]	Under: હેઠળ  [heeṭheḷ]
Before: પહેલાં  [peheeleām]	After: પછી  [pechheī]
Inside: અંદરની બાજુ  [amedereneī beājeu]	Outside: બહાર  [beheār]
With: સાથે  [seāthe]	But: પરંતુ  [peremeteu]
For: માટે  [meāṭe]	From: માંથી  [meāmetheī]
To: માટે  [meāṭe]	In: માં  [meām]

Questions and Adverbs

To ask questions, use the following:

What?: શું?  [śheum?]	Who?: કોણ?  [keoṇe?]
How?: કેવી રીતે?  [keeveī reītee?]	Why?: શા માટે?  [śheā meāṭee?]
Where?: ક્યાં?  [ke'yeām?]

Some of the most important time adverbs:

Never: ક્યારેય નહિં  [ke'yeāreey neheim]	Rarely: ભાગ્યે જ  [bheāgue'ye j]
Sometimes: ક્યારેક  [ke'yeāreek]	Usually: સામાન્ય રીતે  [seāmeāne'y reīte]
Always: હંમેશાં  [hememeeśheām]	Very: અતિશય  [ateiśhey]

Most commonly used pronouns in Gujarati:

I: હું  [heum]	You: તમે  [teme]
He: તે  [te]	She: તેણી   [teeṇeī ]
We: અમે  [ame]	They: તેઓ  [teeo]

To express the possession of something [possessive form]:

My: મારું  [meāreum]	Your: તમારું  [temeāreum]
His: તેમની  [teemeneī]	Her: તેણીના  [teeṇeīneā]
Our: અમારું  [ameāreum]	Their: તેમનું  [teemeneum]

Grammar in a sentence

Some random verbs to show how it's being used:

I speak English: હું ઇંગલિશ બોલું છું   [heum imegueleiśh beoleum chheum ]

You speak French: તમે ફ્રેન્ચ બોલો છો   [teme phe'reene'ch beoleo chheo ]

He speaks German: તેઓ જર્મન બોલે છે   [teeo jere'men beole chhe ]

She speaks Italian: તેણી ઇટાલિયન બોલે છે   [teeṇeī iṭeāleiyen beole chhe ]

I visited France: મેં ફ્રાન્સ ની મુલાકાત લીધી હતી   [meem phe'reāne's neī meuleākeāt leīdheī heteī ]

I will drink milk: હું દૂધ પીવાનો છું   [heum deūdh peīveāneo chheum ]

Some extra grammatical structures:

I understand you: હું તમને સમજી શકું છું   [heum temene semejeī śhekeum chheum ]

I don't understand you: હું તમને સમજી નથી શકતો   [heum temene semejeī netheī śheketeo ]

I don't speak French: હું ફ્રેન્ચ બોલતો નથી  [heum phe'reene'ch beoleteo netheī]

This is my house: આ મારું ઘર છે   [ā meāreum gher chhe ]

That restaurant is far: તે રેસ્ટોરાં દૂર છે  [te reese'ṭeoreām deūr chhe]

No problem: કોઈ સમસ્યા નથી   [keoī semese'yeā netheī ]
